In February 1984, U.S. astronaut Bruce McCandless II became the first person to spacewalk without being tethered to a craft. Wearing a jet pack or MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit), he flew more than 300 feet, about the length of a football field, from the space shuttle Challenger.
