The Liberty Bell was commissioned by the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1751, to mark the 50th anniversary of the state’s original Constitution. It’s not clear when the famous crack appeared, but everyone agrees the bell broke beyond repair while being rung on Washington’s Birthday in 1846.
