The Good Soldier Beetle

Soldier beetles are called “leatherwings” because of the soft, clothlike covering on their wings. These red, yellow, brown, or black bugs are good for gardens because they feed on aphids and other insects. They also eat pollen and nectar, but they don’t damage plants. (Suede Chen / Shutterstock)
