Sacagawea was about 17 years old when she joined Lewis & Clark as a guide on their 1805 Pacific expedition. A Shoshone Indian, she’d been kidnapped by a rival band five years earlier and sold to a fur trader. By chance, she was reunited with her brother during the trek.
