A Song for Independence Day

Before “The Star Spangled Banner” became the official anthem in 1931, the U.S. had several unofficial ones, including the popular “Hail, Columbia.” Philip Phile wrote the music for George Washington’s 1789 inauguration, and lyrics by poet Joseph Hopkinson were added later.
