Hearing Earthquakes in Space

The low-flying Goce satellite, which monitors the pull of gravity across Earth, is so sensitive, it “heard” Japan’s huge 2011 Tohoku earthquake! Major quakes are known to create low-frequency acoustic waves, but Goce was the first space-based instrument to detect them.
