An ancient volcanic eruption helped to create the mostly hexagonal columns of the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. Liquid basalt rock cooled and formed into about 40,000 or so pillar-like shapes, creating a coastal area that looks like it’s covered in huge stepping stones.
