Next time your toast pops up, thank Charles P. Strite. Sick of burnt toast at his work cafeteria, he patented the automatic toaster in 1921. His “Toastmaster” had a timer instead of a manual shutoff, and a spring to eject the toast. By 1926, it was selling like hotcakes!
