Steamboats and Submarines

American inventor Robert Fulton, who built the first commercial U.S. steamboat in 1807, also made a submarine, or “diving boat,” he called the Nautilus. It inspired the like-named vehicle in Jules Verne’s sci-fi classic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
