Why Teeth Don’t Heal

Tooth enamel doesn’t heal by itself because, unlike bones or skin, it’s not close enough to the cells that create it. Called ameloblasts, these cells push the enamel out toward the surface from deeper in the tooth. Once the enamel is made, the ameloblasts can’t add more.
