Mars’s moons, Phobos and Deimos, were discovered in 1877 by U.S. astronomer Asaph Hall. He named them for the sons of the Greek god of war, Ares (known to the Romans as Mars). Phobos is closer to Mars and orbits three times an Earth day, while Deimos takes 30 hours.
