Anti-Pollution Pioneer: Mary Walton

In 1879, Mary Walton helped foster pollution control. She invented a system to filter factory smoke through water tanks, thereby suppressing the release of dangerous particles. She later created a sound-dampening system to help reduce the noise of New York’s elevated trains.
