Three Hours to Live: The Giant Mayfly

At about five inches long, the Tisza or giant mayfly is Europe’s largest mayfly species. Every June on Central Europe’s Tisza River, mayfly larvae hatch en masse after spending three years in the mud. They swarm on the water’s surface to mate, then die in about three hours.
