Carving Out a Tradition: Jack-o’-Lanterns

Happy Halloween! In the British Isles, jack-o’-lanterns were carved from root vegetables like turnips, beets, and potatoes. Immigrants from those countries to the U.S. used the native pumpkin instead and, by the mid-19th century, pumpkin carving was a Halloween tradition.
