Moving Monuments: The Temples at Abu Simbel

Construction of Egypt’s High Dam would have flooded the Abu Simbel temples of Ramesses II and his wife Nefertari, so they were moved! From 1964 to 1968, the sandstone monuments were cut into blocks and raised about 200 feet up the cliff, then rebuilt exactly as they were.
