When Feathers Fly

Unlike most birds, penguins generally lose all their feathers at once. In a “catastrophic molt,” old feathers fall off quickly and expose new ones that have been growing underneath for a few weeks. Penguins aren’t waterproof at this time, so they avoid water and don’t eat.
