Hawaii’s Adopted Nut: The Macadamia

We think of macadamia nuts as Hawaiian, but the tree is actually native to Australia. Botanist Ferdinand von Mueller named the species for his Aussie scientist friend Dr. John MacAdam. Macadamias were first planted in Hawaii around 1880, and commercial farming began around 1921.
