Tanzania’s Lake Natron is so alkaline, it can burn animals’ skin if they aren’t adapted to it. The water has high levels of minerals like sodium carbonate due to rainwater runoff from a nearby volcano, but it still supports an ecosystem that includes flamingos, tilapia, and algae.
