The first volcano modern scientists watched from birth to extinction was in Mexico. When it began erupting in 1943, Parícutin’s cone rose 164 feet in just one day. By year’s end, it was more than 1,000 feet tall! That first year was the most intense, but Parícutin was active until 1952.
