Social worker Irena Sendler helped save at least 2,500 Polish Jews from the Holocaust. Aided by a handful of friends, she smuggled children out of the Warsaw Ghetto. Captured by the Nazis in 1943, she escaped and kept her mission going. Sendler died in 2008 at age 98.
