by Kids Discover

Desert varnish is a thin, sometimes shiny coating seen on exposed rocks in dry areas. It forms as microbes on the rock soak up manganese and iron from the air and deposit them onto the surface. The color depends on how much manganese (black) or iron (red) it contains.
