Islands in the Pancreas

The islets of Langerhans are patches of cells in the pancreas, named for the German doctor who discovered them in 1869. Paul Langerhans was the first to detail the organ’s cell structure, describing nine types of cells, including the beta cells that were later found to make insulin.
