The Lonely Mountain

New Hampshire’s Mt. Monadnock (pictured here) is named after a Native American word for “mountain that stands alone.” Geologists now use the term for any large hill sticking out of a mostly level plain. A similar formation is the inselberg (island mountain), like Australia’s Uluru/Ayers Rock.
