Today, huskies and their sled drivers (called “mushers”) compete in long-distance events, such as the 685-mile Beringia Race in Russia and the 1,100-plus-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska. The longest and most grueling sled-dog race in the world, the Iditarod takes anywhere from 8 to 15 days to complete, and sled teams sometimes face blizzard conditions. Although dog sledding is primarily a sport these days, it was only a few decades ago that huskies and their mushers delivered mail and other supplies to snowed-in Alaskan outposts.
