SOFIA The Flying Telescope

NASA teamed with the German Aerospace Center to create SOFIA, an observatory aboard a special 747 that carries a 17-ton infrared telescope. Being airborne gives it a clearer view of space, and its mobility makes it better for capturing passing events like comets.
