Dogs on Wings

Found only in the Golden State, the California dogface butterfly is named for the dog-head shape that males sport on their wings. (Females have yellow wings with a black spot on each.) Casually known as the state insect since the 1920s, its title became official in 1972. (Bocman / Shutterstock)
