The Five Stages of Sleep

Humans go through five sleep stages: 1 through 4, and REM (Rapid Eye Movement, when most dreams happen). But we cycle through them more than once a night, spending about 20 percent in REM and 50 percent in Stage 2, when eye movements stop and brain waves slow down. (CroMary / Shutterstock)
