First Integrated U.S. Hospital

In 1891, Chicago physician Daniel Hale Williams founded Provident, the first African American-run, racially integrated U.S. hospital. “Dr. Dan” later performed the country’s first known successful open-heart surgery. The stabbing victim he sewed up lived another 20-plus years.
