In southern Africa, sociable weaver birds build one huge nest for a whole colony. Housing up to 500 birds (including some non-weavers), these haystack-like structures can last a century and weigh a ton — enough to break branches. Their size protects birds from predators and climate. (David Steele / Shutterstock)
