Heavy Snowfall

The Lewes Avalanche of 1836 was the U.K.’s deadliest snow avalanche, and the only one that destroyed houses. During a heavy Christmas storm, snow built up on a cliff and later fell onto homes below, killing eight people. Seven others survived, including a baby girl. (Painting: Lewes Castle and Museum)
