Why Coins Have Ridges

by Kids Discover

Why do some U.S. coins have ridges? Modern coins don’t contain precious metals, but when the U.S. Mint began in 1792, certain coins were made of their face value in gold or silver. Criminals shaved the smooth edges to steal the metal, so the Mint added grooves to stop them. (Cory Smith / Shutterstock)
