Around 1900, Edwin Moore invented the pushpin, calling it “a pin with a handle.” His Pennsylvania company still makes them today. In 1903, German clockmaker Johann Kirsten designed a flat-head thumbtack but sold the rights to a businessman, who made a lot of money from tacks.
