On May 8, 1902, Mount Pelée blew its top and destroyed the town of St. Pierre on Martinique, a Caribbean island. A “nuée ardente” (glowing cloud) of gas, dust, ash, steam, and rock flowed down the mountain and into the 30,000-person town, killing almost everyone, almost instantly.
