Counting the Wolf Number

In 1848, astronomer Rudolf Wolf began measuring the daily number of sunspots using a formula based on counting single spots and groups. Nowadays, the “Wolf number” is not the most accurate, but it offers the best historical view of solar activity, since it goes back 150+ years.
