The First Metal Boats

The first clash of ironclad ships was during the Civil War in 1862, between the North’s USS Monitor and the South’s CSS Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimack). The battle was a draw, but it shifted the world’s navies toward building armored ships instead of wooden ones.
