How Atoms Stick

Atoms stick together, or form chemical bonds, when the valence electrons on their shells hook up. In 1916, U.S. chemist Gilbert N. Lewis first showed how to map the bonds in a molecule by drawing lines between atoms in a sketch called a Lewis structure or electron dot structure.
