Mars is called the “Red Planet” because the surface contains iron-rich minerals that oxidize, or rust, and the dust swirls up into the atmosphere to make the planet look red. Mars has the largest volcanic mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons, which is 78,000 feet high.
