Dark of the Moon

The dark plains on the moon are called “maria,” Latin for “seas,” because early astronomers thought they were water. But they are mostly basalt, a rock formed when volcanoes erupt. Basalt is common on Earth — there’s more of it under the surface than any other type of rock.
