February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s packed with opportunities for meaningful learning. From honoring influential leaders to exploring science, culture, and global traditions, this month offers plenty of ways to connect lessons across subjects. Below are six February dates and themes you can bring to life with Kids Discover.

Black History Month
February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and leadership of Black Americans throughout history. Students can explore powerful stories through our Historical Figures Landing Page, which highlights individuals who shaped science, politics, culture, and social change. Pair this with our Civil Rights Unit to help students understand the struggle for equality, the importance of activism, and the lasting impact of the Civil Rights Movement on American society.

February 2 – World Wetlands Day
World Wetlands Day shines a spotlight on one of Earth’s most important ecosystems. Wetlands help prevent flooding, filter water, and provide habitats for countless plant and animal species. Use our Wetlands Unit to help students explore why these environments matter and how protecting them supports both wildlife and human communities.

February 6 – Winter Olympics Begin
The start of the Winter Olympics is a perfect opportunity for cross-curricular learning. Students can explore the country hosting the games with our Europe Unit, while connecting the origins of the Olympics to our Ancient Greece Unit. Bring science into the mix with our Force and Motion Unit, where students can investigate how speed, gravity, and friction affect winter sports like skiing, skating, and bobsledding.

February 14 – Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day isn’t just about cards and candy. It’s also a great time to explore the science behind the heart. Our Heart Unit helps students learn how this vital organ works, how it pumps blood throughout the body, and why keeping it healthy is so important. It’s a fun and meaningful way to connect biology to a familiar holiday.

February 16 – Presidents’ Day
Presidents’ Day invites students to learn more about leadership, government, and the role of the executive branch. Use our Presidency Unit to explore the responsibilities of the president, how the office has evolved over time, and the impact presidents have had on U.S. history.

February 17 – Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year is a vibrant celebration observed by cultures around the world. Students can explore the history, traditions, and symbolism of this holiday through our Ancient China Unit, especially the Celebrating the Chinese New Year Topic. From festivals and food to zodiac animals and family traditions, this lesson offers a rich cultural perspective.
