Beware the Volcanic Mud

Lahar is an Indonesian word for a mix of water and volcanic debris that flows quickly down a volcano or through a river valley. An eruption can trigger one, but they’re usually caused by heavy rains or snowmelt during or after eruptions. Lahars can wreck buildings, block streams, and bury valleys.
