Black Blizzards

The worst environmental disaster in U.S. history was the Dust Bowl. In 1931, a combination of overplowing and extreme drought caused much of the Great Plains to literally dry up and blow away. Massive dust storms called “black blizzards” lasted for years, and normal rainfall didn’t resume until 1939.
