In 1965, DuPont chemist Stephanie Kwolek was working on a new fiber for tires. She created a liquid crystal solution that could be spun into a super-strong material. This became Kevlar, the tough substance used today in body armor, helmets, and even spacecraft. (Peter Kai / Shutterstock)
