Crater Makes an Impact

Arizona’s Meteor Crater was the first on Earth to be identified as an impact crater, one formed by a space object hitting the planet (in this case, a 100,000-ton rock that hit between 20,000 and 50,000 years ago). Nearly a mile wide, the crater is about 550 feet deep and was a lake long ago. (Photo: Vladislov Grajic)
