The first electric cars used as commercial vehicles were London taxis — in 1897! As a matter of fact, by 1900 more than a quarter of all U.S. autos were electric. But soon gasoline became more affordable, and gas-powered vehicles were cheaper. By the 1920s, EVs were on their way out… for a while.
