Earthquake Makes Waves

The world’s largest recorded earthquake shook southern Chile in May 1960, triggering tsunamis that caused damage locally and as far away as Japan and the Philippines. The waves wiped out much of Hawaii’s Hilo Bay too, but an official warning system helped save many lives. (Photo: US Navy)
