A foehn (pronounced “fern”) is a warm, dry, strong wind that blows down a mountainside. Known as a chinook in the North American Rockies, it forms when moist air dries out as it climbs, then compresses and heats up quickly. Foehns can raise temperatures and melt snow rapidly. This image shows a foehn wind blowing down the alps, just outside a small town near Munich, Germany.
