Hot Gas From the Sun

A coronal mass ejection (CME) is an eruption on the sun’s surface that sends huge amounts of hot gas, or plasma, into space. A CME that hits Earth can trigger the Northern and Southern lights and make those phenomena, usually seen near the poles, visible at lower latitudes.
