In the Forbidden City

Built in the 1400s, the vast Forbidden City of Beijing was the center of Chinese government until the 1911 revolution deposed the last emperor, Puyi, ending 2,000 years of imperial rule. It was called “forbidden” because people could only enter with the emperor’s permission.
