Kiwi City of Steam

Built by the New Zealand government as a tourist spa town in the 1880s, the city of Rotorua is known for its mud pools, hot springs, geysers, and rotten-egg smell. The country’s largest geyser, Pohutu, erupts many times daily. From 2000-01, it vented hot water for 250 days straight! (Pichugin Dmitry / Shutterstock)
