Mexico’s state of Yucatán has thousands of cenotes (si-NOH-tees), or natural sinkholes that form when a cavern collapses. Some are open wells, like the famous Chichén Itzá (Sacred Well), but they can also be fully or partly underground, or sit at land level like a lake.
